Introducing Discourse

We’ve moved our main discussion and documentation over to the Discourse platform.  While our Google Group and Wiki are still open, they will be deprecated soon. Why did we do this?

We Are Open!

South London Makerspace is now open for regular use by all members. It’s taken a little longer than we hoped, but Phase 1 is now in a good enough condition to be used for regular making. We still need to get tools and equipment all stored in convenient places, and finish off some decoration/electrical work, but…

A Laser Arrives

As the Grand Opening approaches, we’ve just taken delivery of the crown jewel in our workshop: A Trotec Speedy 300 laser cutter. Trotec have been incredibly generous by supplying us with this machine, which is light years ahead of the anonymous hobby models that we’d otherwise be able to afford. The software in particular is very user-friendly.  The cutter…

Makerspace Will Open 27th May – Let’s Get It Done!

The end of Phase 1 is now almost close enough to touch. The heavy lifting is all done, and we’re on the home straight. Just think: Six months ago, the space looked like this. And now it looks like this: There’s still plenty to do – wiring, plumbing, painting and tidying. The next two weeks will be busy. The construction crew…

Happy Birthday To Us (and thanks for the presents!)

This time last year, we’d just got the keys to our first space on Norwood Road. We were painting and cleaning in preparation for furniture and tools, and had what felt like a mountain of work ahead of us. 12 months later, the mountain still looms ahead, but when we look behind us, we can see just how…

Makerspace live on TV

We’re very excited to have won funding from the Greater London Authority towards Phase 2, where we build out and kit up the second half of the arch. The GLA didn’t stop there, however! Out of all the ‘High Street Fund’ awardees, they chose South London Makerspace to make the announcement from. There was live TV,…

Phase 2 is go: £20k Funding Secured!

We’re very excited indeed to announce that we’ve been selected as a beneficiary of the GLA’s High Street Fund, which seeks to revitalise and strengthen London’s high streets. We started applying for this money towards the end of last year, when the space was still an empty shell full of building materials – on the off-chance that someone at City…

Phase 1: Construction Update

Phase 1 means South London Makerspace will actually be a makerspace: after taking possession of Arch 1129, 41 Norwood Road (just behind our previous shop unit) in mid-October, we’ve been incredibly busy working towards a state where we can open. This won’t be the makerspace finished, but as we say: phase one complete. Before Christmas, our energies were…

This Saturday and Sunday (31st Jan and 1st Feb), we’re calling for All Hands to help make the makerspace. There are two big jobs which can soak up as much labour as we can throw at them: Finishing the Lining We’re now much closer to the end than this week-old photo shows. Just a couple more rows to…

2014 is Over, But We’re Just Getting Started

It took a little while longer that we wanted, but we finally got the back wall finished before Christmas. Lots of people gained lots of experience handling concrete blocks and mortar, and we can now make noise in the evenings without annoying the neighbours. (Door and window coming soon!) Measure Twice, Cut Once….Actually, Measure Again –…
